While India tried everything to dislodge this partnership quickly, the duo were determined to take Australia ahead. Jasprit Bumrah, however, took a five-wicket haul, while Nitish Reddy and Mohd. After a rain-affected Day 1 of India vs Australia 3rd Test where Australia managed 28 for no loss in 13.2 overs, Day 2 began on a good note for India. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah scalped two quick wickets to leave Australia at 38 for 2. The first one to go was Usman Khwaja who edged it to Rishbah Pant. A couple of overs later, Jaspirt induced an outside edge of Nathan McSweeney to Virat Kohli at second slip.

After the fall of two quick wickets, India were all charged up as there were plays and misses and raps on the pad. However, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith decided to consolidate by seeing off the bowlers. The partnership helped Australia regain control at Gabba, Brisbane. Just when the partnership was looking threatening for India, Nitish Reddy struck by removing a rather subdued Marnus, who edged an away-going delivery to Virat Kohli at second slip. Travis Head and Steve Smith batted with a lot more purpose in the second session of the Test match. Both got a measure of the conditions and started scoring at a brisk pace. Head, in particular, was severe to anything around the off-stump area. Towards the end of the second session, he brought up another Test hundred. Steve Smith brought up his half-century too. At Tea, Australia were comfortably placed at 234 for 3. Head and Smith had put on 103 and 65, respectively.

Smith Registers 33rd Test Ton, Head Smashes 152 as Kangaroos Dominate the 3rd Session

The first half of the third session saw Travis Head and Steve Smith put on quick runs. Head was smacking everyone, and he had the licence to go for the kill as Indian bowlers looked clueless. Smith registered his 33rd Test hundred with a single off Akash Deep. India took the second new ball immediately, and it brought about the fall of Steve Smith who edged to Rohit Sharma at first slip off Jasprit Bumrah. A few overs later, Bumrah took two quick wickets of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head to leave Australia at 327 for 6. While Head smashed 152 with 12 fours, Marsh could only score five.

Alex Carey and Pat Cummins then took the attack to the Indian bowlers by scoring quickly. The duo put on 58 runs for the 7th wicket before Pat Cummins edged to Rishabh Pant off Mohd. Siraj. Cummins scored a useful 20. Alex Carey and Mitchell remained unbeaten at 45 and 7, respectively.
