India vs Australia Border-Gavaskar Trophy – Lessons to Learn by Team India from the Loss

So, after 10 years of domination in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India finally surrendered it to the mighty Aussies in the latter’s den. Australia won the SCG Test Match to win the BGT 3-1. Outstanding performance from Pat Cummins and his boys! They deserve every bit of credit for the way they performed. After a 295-run drubbing in the series opener at Optus Perth, Australia clawed their way back to win the Test series. While the series has happy memories for Australia, it serves as a reminder for Indian cricket. Take a look at the lessons to learn from this unforgettable tour down under.

Biggest Lesson from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy – Don’t be Overconfident

Confidence is the biggest asset when managed brilliantly. When confidence converts into overconfidence, it starts to bite you. That’s exactly what India suffered on this Australian tour. They began the series with a massive 295-run win at Optus Perth. Full marks to them for the way they fought back after being reduced to 150 all out in the first innings. While Jasprit Bumrah shone with the ball throughout the game, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli contributed with the bat in the second innings.

However, they got carried away and didn’t prepare well enough for the next four tests. The Pink Ball Test Match at Adelaide was always going to be a tough affair for India. They hardly play with pink balls at home. The loss was all the more obvious then. After that loss, India simply lost the grip over the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While India had their moments, Australia held their nerve better in the crunch moments. The series scoreline of 3-1 could well have been 4-1 had rain not interrupted the Brisbane Test, which ended in a draw. In a long trip spanning five Test matches, fitness and concentration levels should be top-notch throughout.

Individual Brilliances Can’t Win You Test Series

Cricket is a team sport where individuals thrive and make a name for themselves. Jasprit Bumrah, who took 32 wickets in the series, was declared the Player of the Series. Indians are lucky to have someone like Jasprit Bumrah who can torment the opposition with pace, bounce, swing and seam. He won India the series opener at Perth. But he needed support, both from his bowling partners and the batters. While support from other bowlers came in bits and pieces, batters didn’t contribute as a unit.

On the record books, Jaiswal scored nearly 400 runs on the trip, KL Rahul managed nearly 300 runs and so did Nitish Reddy. But when it mattered the most, they didn’t come along. The poor run of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma didn’t help the cause either. It ended up being a series between Australia and Jasprit Bumrah and not India vs Australia. What’s more, Jasprit Bumrah ended up doing damage to his back as he was made to bowl over 150 overs on the trip. The fact that the Indian batters didn’t bat long, Bumrah was seen bowling more than cooling the heels.

The team should unite and perform with both bat and ball, one more important lesson from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Adapt to the Changing Times – Lessons for Virat, Shubman and Pant from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

India may have won two back-to-back BGT series in Australia. But it was never going to be an easy trip for them in 2024-25, particularly for the batters. Australia had their plans, and they executed them perfectly in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Virat Kohli kept repeating the same mistake of fishing outside the off-stump and giving catches to wicketkeeper Alex Carey and his slip cordon colleagues. His tendency to be on the front foot even before the ball was delivered only complicated matters for him on bouncy surfaces in Australia. He seemed vulnerable right throughout.

Shubman Gill, on the other hand, had numerous brain fades in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He looked set and got out playing rash shots. Pant rode the similar ride and got a Stupid, Stupid and Stupid rant from the legend Sunil Gavaskar on the commentator box when getting out to a ram shot at MCG that India lost by 184 runs.

You never remain the same, the opposition evaluates you and so there’s a need to have different plans to counter challenges.
