India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 3 – Kiwis Win by 113 Runs, Seal the Series

New Zealand have created a history by beating India in the 2nd Test match in Pune by 113 runs, adding to the win they achieved in the first Test at Chinnaswamy. The second successive win helped the Blackcaps win the Test Series for the first time in India. Mitchell Santner was the star performance with the ball with 6 wickets in the second innings along with his 7-wicket haul in the first innings. He was thus declared ‘Player of the Match’ in India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 3.

Ravindra Jadeja started the proceedings for India on Day 3 in Pune as New Zealand looked to add to the 301-run lead. Glenn Philips scored the first run of the day with an inside edge on the leg side. Lucky escape for Philips as the outside edge induced off Ravichandran Ashwin’s slider went between the wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and first slip fielder Rohit Sharma to the fence. Philips made full use of the reprieve by lifting Ashwin over the mid-off region for a boundary. He hit his third boundary of the day by slapping Ashwin into the backward region.

Wickets Fall in Clusters as Jadeja, Ashwin Take the Remaining Five Wickets Quickly on Day 3

Ravindra Jadeja picked the first wicket in India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 3 by breaching the defence of Tom Blundell to shatter his stumps. It was his first wicket in this Test match. Jadeja soon picked his second wicket as Mitchell Santner failed to clear his lofted shot for a maximum as Jasprit Bumrah took an easy catch at long-on. The dismissal had a lot to do with the struggle Santner encounter while defending. In a bid to release the pressure, he played a big shot and perished as the ball hit the toe end of his bat.

Ashwin then had Tim Southee caught by Rohit Sharma at first slip with his slider to leave New Zealand at 238 for 8. Ashwin had Ajaz Patel trapped leg before wicket as per ball tracking, however, Rohit Sharma didn’t go for the review to challenge the on-field umpire’s decision of Not Out. However, Ajaz Patel fell to a lofted shot he played off Jadeja. Washington Sundar took a good running catch at deep mid-wicket. Philips smashed Ashwin for a six at deep mid-wicket to swell New Zealand’s lead to over 350. Philips smashed another six in the next over off Jadeja to pile on India’s agony further. William ORourke was out run out as New Zealand were bowled out for 255, gaining a lead of 358 runs.

India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 3 – India Blaze Away Early Before Santner Scalps Rohit

The Indians came out with an intent to score runs quickly in pursuit of the 359-run victory target set by New Zealand. Jasiwal smashed the second ball of the first over off Southee for a maximum. The next ball saw Jaiswal smacking a four. Rohit Sharma hit his first over the next over with his trademark pull shot. 

However, a few overs later, Mitchell Santner got Rohit Sharma out as the Indian skipper lunged forward to defend a delivery that bounced off the surface to induce an inside edge that lobbed to Will Young at short leg. He scored only 8 runs. Shubman hit his first boundary by sweeping Ajaz Patel through the backward square leg region. Both Jaiswal and Gill kept scoring at a brisk pace with the former being in an ominous mood. Jaiswal smashed 46 off 36 with 3 fours and as many sixes. Shubhman, on the other hand, scored a breezy 22 off 20 to take India to 81 for 1 at lunch.

India vs New Zealand Post-Lunch Session on Day 3 of 2nd Test Match – Santner Triggers a Batting Collapse with a 5-wicket Haul

Yashasvi Jaiswal hit a boundary on the leg side to bring up his half-century and then cut one a couple of balls later off Philips to take India to 96. However, Santner induced an outside edge of Shubman Gill to Daryl Mitchell at first slip. Virat Kohli came and raised India’s hundred with a wristy flick on the leg side. Meanwhile, Jaiswal continued to find boundaries as New Zealand looked clueless to stop him from playing strokes. However, Santner removed him soon as he edged to Daryl Mitchell at first slip for a well-made 77 off 65 balls. Jaiswal hit 9 boundaries and three sixes in this innings.

Rishabh Pant was out run out for a duck as he failed to reach the crease despite putting on an dive to a single. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, was assured on the crease. He played a lovely cut shot off Ajaz to pick up a boundary. However, another heartbreak for India as Mitchell Santer once again scalped Virat Kohli, who was trapped leg before wicket for 17. Santner then removed Sarfaraz Khan for 9 to leave the Men in Blue reeling at 165 for 6 in India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 3. Sarfaraz played for the drift that turned slightly to knock his off-stump. That was the fifth wicket for Santner in this innings.

Glenn Philips then removed Washington Sundar with an inside edge into the pad and on to Will Young at short leg. Ravichandran Ashwin hit two boundaries off the last over before Tea to take India to 178 for 7.

India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 3, Final Session – Kiwis Wrap Up India for 245, Win by 113 Runs

Jadeja and Ashwin batted sensibly in the Final Session of India vs New Zealand 2nd Test Day 3 to take the team past the 200-run mark. However, Santner flighted a delivery on off to which Ashwin tried to drive through the covers only to give a simple catch to Daryl Mitchell at first slip. Both stitched a 39-run partnership for the eighth wicket as Akash Deep came to the crease. Jadeja and Akash started ticking the scoreboard along with ones and twos with the former hitting boundaries in between.

Akash, however, could not resist long as pulled a short ball off Ajaz Patel straight to Rachin Ravindra at long-on. Jasprit Bumrah swept Santner for six and four off successive balls. Ravindra Jadeja, however, was out in the next over as he could not clear a lofted shot he attempted against Ajaz Patel. Tim Southee took an excellent catch at long-on, inches away from the fence. India were bowled out for 245, losing the 2nd Test match to New Zealand by a whopping 113-run margin.
